UT Upsets the No. 4 Ferris State Bulldogs

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa Spartans split in their final day of action at the Courtyard by Marriot Volleyball Classic, hosted by UT.
Kicking off the afternoon with a 12:45 p.m. match, the Spartans fell to the Drury University Panthers by set scores of 25-19, 20-25, 26-24, 19-25, and 17-17. The Spartans offense was headed by the sophomore duo of Sorrel Houghton and Katie McKiel. Houghton ended the match with 15 kills three digs and three blocks, while McKiel notched a double-double, logging 14 kills and 15 digs. Sammy Mueller had a whopping 49 assists, along with 18 digs, and two kills. Besides Mueller, the other leading defender for the Spartans was sophomore Melissa Elias, who recorded 18 digs in addition to having eight kills, two assists, and three blocks. Taylor Fosler and Alexandra Misca dominated net play in the middle, with 12 and eight kills respectively. Fosler hit an outstanding .429.
To close out the Courtyard by Marriott Volleyball Classic, the No. 25 Tampa Spartans upset the No. 4 Ferris State Bulldogs by set scores of 24-26, 25-23, 25-16, 19-25, and 15-12. In this match, it was Fosler who led the Spartans offensively, terminating 18 swings at a .533 kill percentage, followed by McKiel with 17 and Houghton with 13. Libero Nicole Dominguez, as well as Elias, led the team in digs with 16 each. Elias also had six kills, and seven assists. Mueller earned her second double-double of the day with exactly 49 assists and 14 digs.
After upsetting the No. 4 team in the nation, Tampa moves to 7-1 on the season heading into conference competition beginning Friday, September 7th against the Florida Tech Panthers. For all your news regarding Tampa Volleyball click here.
