University Area CDC Earns Multi-Year Community Investment Funding from United Way Suncoast

Tampa, Fla. – University Area Community Development Corporations (CDC)’s role as a United Way Suncoast strategic community partner moves into a new era this month with the launch of a multi-year funding commitment from the venerable nonprofit leader.

United Way Suncoast kicked off its new fiscal year on July 1 by initiating the distribution of a three-year grant that will deliver $140,000 to University Area CDC. Funds will be used to support the STEPS for Success® program. STEPS provides one-on-one guidance and individualized goal plans for motivated individuals who wish to improve their circumstances. STEPS navigators help mitigate crisis, prevent homelessness and stabilize program participants on their quests toward self-sufficiency. Participants receive support in finding gainful employment, attaining safe and affordable housing and becoming self-sustained through educational opportunities, workforce training, life skills and financial guidance.

Sarah Combs, University Area CDC executive director and CEO, expressed excitement about the support. “United Way Suncoast has been an incredible partner to our organization over the past several years. We were thrilled to receive the Community Investment Funding and will utilize it to grow this effective and impactful program.”

The community investment represents a first in United Way Suncoast’s 98-year history — a three-year commitment to 88 nonprofits that will total nearly $18 million by fiscal year 2025. In past years, United Way Suncoast issued annual grants. The new approach will empower University Area CDC to boost the strategic planning behind the STEPS for Success program® and grow together with United Way Suncoast.

“Our strategic community partners requested a change to multi-year funding and the reasons are clear,” United Way Suncoast CEO Jessica Muroff said. “It’ll create trends and allow us to measure true impact; it’ll reduce the strain of the application process for the partners and UWS, and it’ll strengthen our ability to tell stories and fundraise.”

Local doctor writes children’s book to raise money for churches and teach the true meaning of Christmas

Take your Guardian Harold the Angel everywhere you go

A well known and respected physician in Clearwater Florida has written a heartwarming story about an angel that learns the true meaning of Christmas. Dr. Gerald Niedzwiecki, a Vascular Specialist and Interventional Radiologist, wanted to write a book that teaches the ideas that support your family values of Christmas

Dr. Jerry, as he is known, was inspired by his memories with his three daughters, whom are all grown and graduated from college. It’s the love he has for his daughters, that encouraged him to write a children’s book about Christ and Christmas.

As our lives get more complex, it sometimes becomes too easy to forget why we celebrate Christmas. The true meaning of Christmas is best delivered to our children through words and actions, but it never hurts to have a guardian angel at your side to help us remember. Each book comes with it’s own Harold the Angel Doll. That’s right, not only will parents be able to read about Harold’s amazing story with their children, but the children will get to take their very own guardian, Harold the Angel doll everywhere they go.

Dr. Jerry is a parishioner of Espiritu Santo Catholic Church in Safety Harbor. He wanted to find a way to give back to churches and members. The Harold the Angel Book Set is available as a fundraiser. Churches and other organizations can get more information by visiting the website www.myharoldtheangel.com for NO RISK fundraiser details.

ABOUT SARASOTA YOUTH OPERA

Since 1984, Sarasota Youth Opera has given thousands of young people an opportunity to experience opera first-hand through participation in after-school choruses, Sarasota Opera mainstage productions, summer workshops, and fully staged Youth Opera productions. As the only program in the United States committed to presenting annual full-scale opera productions for young voices, accepting all who wish to participate regardless of skill level or ability to pay, Sarasota Youth Opera is a national model for opera education.

Youth Opera Choruses: Beginning at age 8, singers are placed in one of two chorus levels. Each chorus provides a setting for everyone to participate and progress at their own level as they gain greater skills and experience. Selections performed are made up of classical music, which includes opera and choral pieces in different languages. The choruses perform throughout the community in formal concerts and outreach events.

Opera Mainstage Season: Members of the Youth Opera are selected to join Sarasota Opera’s Winter Festival season, appearing in the mainstage children’s chorus, as supernumeraries (extras who perform non-singing roles) and for special roles written by the composer for children’s voices. In recent seasons these have included roles in La bohème, Tosca, and Carmen. Singers are involved in the complete production process – from early music and dramatic rehearsals to performing alongside opera professionals.

Youth Opera Productions: Part of Sarasota Opera’s commitment to young people includes the commissioning of new operatic works written for children and young adults. Six new works have been presented as part of this mission: Deadline (1989), Polly Pen’s Her Lightness (1993), Tom Suta’s Eye of Ra (1998), John Kennedy’s The Language of Birds (2004), Daron Hagen’s Little Nemo in Slumberland (2012) and Rachel J. Peters’ Rootabaga Country (2017). Members take part in the making of each opera, complete with professional staging, costumes, lighting, sound, and orchestral accompaniment.

UT Announces Partnership With SkillStorm To Expand Access To Advanced Technology Education

TAMPA – The University of Tampa has announced a partnership with SkillStorm, a tech talent accelerator that hires, trains, certifies and deploys IT talent in the most in-demand technology fields. The partnership will provide customized training to students to meet the specific hiring needs of technology companies across the greater Tampa region and throughout the country.

The University of Tampa partnered with SkillStorm, a tech talent accelerator that hires, trains, certifies and deploys IT talent in the most in-demand technology fields.

The partnership compliments UT’s increased focus on technology education for undergraduate, graduate and continuing education students, and will strengthen the University’s bond with local and national technology companies.

“Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing labor market, companies nationwide are turning to new models of education and training that can help fill critical tech talent gaps,” said Joe Mitchell, COO of SkillStorm. “We’re excited to partner with a top university in the Tampa Bay area to build a tech talent hub that will help companies seeking to access talent certified in today’s most in-demand technologies.”

The partnership helps close a persistent tech skills gap, enabling college graduates to gain the skills and experience needed to access high-paying, in-demand careers while providing commercial and federal organizations with talent to support critical technology initiatives.

“UT already has a broad array of quality information technology programs; however, we envision adding further opportunities for students,” said University of Tampa President Ronald Vaughn. “The partnership with SkillStorm is a tremendous asset, not only for students but also for area technology companies.”

The partnership consists of two tracks, the Accelerator Program and the Emerging Tech Program. SkillStorm’s Accelerator Program provides online, asynchronous and instructor-led training courses to help students gain certification in high-demand enterprise technologies like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Salesforce and Pega.

The organization’s Emerging Tech program hires recent grads, transitioning service members and veterans with a strong technology background, and provides 12 weeks of customized training before deploying them to their Fortune 500 and Federal Integrator clients.

Both programs are open to students who did not graduate from UT, but UT alumni will have a preference in the application process.

Graduates without any prior coding experience are encouraged to complete SkillStorm’s series of free, self-paced, online introductory coding courses prior to applying to join SkillStorm. Candidates who successfully pass the tech screen may be hired by SkillStorm and take the 12-week course before joining a client company.

At present, UT has about 600 students enrolled in more than 30 undergraduate, graduate, concentrations and certificate technology programs. UT is currently building a six-story, 91,000-square-foot Technology Building located in the center of campus that will house the many academic programs related to technology, including computer science, business information technology, management information systems, cybersecurity, business analytics, SAP certification and more. It will also be a hub for UT’s Information Technology and Security organization.

For more information, visit ut.edu/skillstorm.

The University of Tampa is a private, comprehensive university located on 110 acres on the riverfront in downtown Tampa. Known for academic excellence, personal attention and real-world experience in its undergraduate and graduate programs, the University has about 200 programs of study and serves 10,500 students from 50 states and most of the world’s countries.
