Volleyball Remains Undefeated – University of Tampa Athletics

RINDGE, N.H. – Concluding opening weekend, the University of Tampa Spartans remain undefeated, winning the Raven First Serve Invitational, hosted by Franklin Pierce University.
Kicking off the day with a 10:00 A.M. match, the Spartans swept the LIU Post Pioneers by set scores of 25-20, 25-14, and 25-17. Katie McKiel headed the offensive efforts for Tampa, terminating 16 swings, followed by Sorrel Houghton who had 10. Defensively, Nicole Dominguez and freshman Claudia Rivera contributed with nine digs each, while Sammy Mueller quarterbacked the team, ending the contest with 34 assists and eight digs.
In their second and final match of the day, UT out-battled the Grand Valley State Lakers in four sets by scores of 23-25, 25-12, 25-22, and 25-16. Similar to their first match, McKiel proved value on the court, earning a double-double with 20 kills and 11 digs. Houghton and Sarah Luoma followed in offensive efforts with 15 and eight kills respectively. Mueller earned her second double-double of the season with 41 assists and 10 digs, while Dominguez led the team defensively with 12 digs.
The Spartans home opener will be on August 31st, with a doubleheader against West Texas A&M and Catawba at 3:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. respectively. UT will then take the court again on September 1st against Drury at 12:45 P.M. and Ferris State at 7:00 P.M.
