TAMPA, Fla.– The University of Tampa was selected as the No. 3 seed entering the NCAA South Regional, as announced by the NCAA on Sunday night. The Spartans will take on a familiar opponent, SSC foe, the Saint Leo University Lions, who were awarded the No. 6 seed. Tampa took the conference series against Saint Leo, winning both regular-season matches 3-1.
Five of the eight teams selected to the South Region tournament are members of the Sunshine State Conference, including host, and No. 1 seed, Palm Beach Atlantic University. In addition to Tampa and Saint Leo, Barry University was awarded the No. 2 seed, and Florida Southern College took the No. 4 seed.
The Tampa vs. Saint Leo matchup will be the first game of the NCAA South Regional and will begin at noon on Thursday, November 15. All games will be held at the Rubin Arena at the Green Complex for Sports and Recreation on the main campus of Palm Beach Atlantic University.
This selection marks Tampa’s 23rdstraight NCAA tournament appearance. The Spartans have won the South Region 17 times, made it to the final four 10 times, and have won the National Championship twice (2006 and 2014).
After finishing tied at 17-3 in conference play and splitting the season series, the University of Tampa and Barry University were named the 2018 SSC volleyball co-champions. The Spartans have now won 26 SSC titles, with the last one coming in 2015. Of the 26, 25 of these titles have been won under the helm of head coach Chris Catanach.
