Spartans’ Senior Night Spoiled by Florida Tech

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa women’s soccer team fell short against Florida Tech on Saturday evening. Despite a beautiful goal for UT, the Panthers scored two goals in the second half to spoil the final regular season home match.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Florida Tech 2, Tampa 1
Records: University of Tampa Spartans (6-5-4, 4-3-2 SSC) vs. Florida Tech Panthers (8-7-1, 5-4-0 SSC)
Location: Pepin Stadium || Tampa, Fla.
All-time Series: Tampa leads 11-4-7, this was the first time Florida Tech has defeated UT at Pepin Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Half | The Spartans offense came alive late in the second half as Libby Wissman lofted a 20 yard chip into the back of the net to give UT a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute. As the seconds were winding down, Lisa Caprara had a breakaway with the goalie and chipped the goalie however the clock touched zero before Caprara could make contact with the ball. Megan Bromwell was under pressure as well as Florida Tech laced off five goals, two on target. In the 27th minute, Jeeda Al-Naber provided the best opportunity of the half as she ripped a shot towards the lower right corner, but Bromwell was able to secure the diving save.
2nd Half | In the 61st minute, Maria Munoz served a through-ball into the 18 yard box to Keira McCarthy, and McCarthy poked it past Bromwell to even the score at one apiece. The goal was McCarthy’s ninth of the season which is third in the SSC. Munoz was granted a penalty kick in the 79th minute and cashed in her seventh goal of the year to put Florida Tech in front. The seventh goal for Munoz leads all freshman in the SSC.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- This was the 11th match decided by one goal or less.
- Munoz took the lead over Moeko Morse for most goals scored by SSC freshman.
- Florida Tech committed eight fouls in comparsion to UT’s three.
