Spartans Defeated In Opening Round of the SSC Tournament
Tampa, Fla. – The University of Tampa women’s soccer team completed the 2018-2019 season with an extra time loss in the first round of the SSC Quarterfinals.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Embry-Riddle 1, Tampa 0 (2OT)
Records: University of Tampa Spartans (7-6-4, 5-3-2 SSC) vs. Embry-Riddle Eagles (8-7-0, 5-5-0 SSC)
Location: Pepin Stadium || Tampa, Fla.
All-time Series: Tampa leads 4-2-0, this was the first victory at Pepin Stadium for Embry-Riddle.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Half | The Spartans came out aggressively to start the game and totaled nine shots with Lisa Caprara leading the team with three. As for the Eagles, they had one shot in the first 45 minutes. Nastasia Asgedom had a wonderful opportunity at the top of the box that was saved by Embry-Riddle’s goalkeeper Dana Ruchti, who had a total of four saves in the first half. During the 41st minute, Caprara committed a nice move past a defender, just within the box, that was saved by Ruchti.
2nd Half | The Spartans continued to apply pressure throughout the second half with 10 shots. The first shot from the Spartans to start the half was a header from Asgedom. Two of the 10 shots came in the 75th minute as UT ripped back to back shots, however, Julia Detwiler‘s shot was blocked which led to a Libby Wissman rebound opportunity which was saved. Embry-Riddle tallied only two shots which came from Ragnhheidur Gardarsdo and Elizabeth Allen. Gardarsdo’s shot was blocked and Allen’s shot went wide resulting in Megan Bromwell ending the half with zero saves. Embry-Riddle’s goalkeeper Ruchti tallied seven saves in the match which tied her season-high.
Extra Time | In the first half of OT, only three shots were presented, all by the Spartans. One was blocked and the other two were both wide. In the second half, Ali Robinson had an opportunity at a goal but it sailed high. In the 105th minute, several deflections in the Spartans 18-yard box led the ball to the foot of Embry-Riddle’s Guro Naess Berge, who cashed in the first round clincher.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Asgedom finished the season as the leader of assists, totaling six on the season.
- Cady completed the season as the leader with eight goals, totaling 16 points which also leads the team.
- Caprara led the game with a season-high of six shots.
