Tampa Volleyball Climbs Poll to No. 16
TAMPA, Fla. – After opening Sunshine State Conference play with a perfect 2-0 record, the University of Tampa Volleyball team tabbed the No. 16 spot in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II coaches poll as announced by the association office, Monday. Tampa’s overall record advances to 9-1.
Most recently, the team cruised past Embry-Riddle in four sets to extend their series lead over the Eagles to 8-0. Sophomore outside hitters Katie McKiel and Sorrel Houghton were in the forefront of the Spartan attack ending the match with 17 kills apiece. Melissa Elias contributed eight kills as Tampa finished with a .315 kill percentage. Libero Nicole Dominguez finished the match with a season-high 23 digs as the Spartans held Embry-Riddle to a .178 kill percentage. Junior, Sammy Mueller continued to play a crucial role for the Spartans, earning her sixth double-double of the season with 41 assists and 14 digs.
Nebraska-Kearney snags the No. 1 spot, followed Northern State at No. 2. The reigning national champions, Concordia-St. Paul, fall to No. 3. To round out the top five, Palm Beach Atlantic takes the No. 4 position, and Lewis holds No. 5.
Tampa will continue its season at home this week, with two conference matches. The first game will be held Tuesday, September 11 against the Rollins College Tars. The Eckerd College Tritons are on deck for a matchup starting at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday the 13th.
