Tampa Drops Matinee Doubleheader to Minnesota-Duluth

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team dropped the matinee doubleheader to Minnesota-Duluth, losing consecutive games for the first time since February 2.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (Game One):
Final: Minnesota-Duluth 4 (W: Sam Pederson, 2-5), Tampa 1 (L: Corynn Miner, 12-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 3RD | To lead off the inning, UM-Duluth’s Hannah Bloch roped a single up the middle. With two outs, Lauren Oberle blasted a home run to deep left center field with the help of a 17 mile-per-hour wind gust blowing out to center. Oberle leads the Bulldogs with five homers on the year. || UMD 2, UT 0
TOP 4TH | UMD’s Jessica Bren hit a sky-fly to left field and reached on an error by the Spartans’ left-fielder, Emily Proffitt. Bren advanced to second on the misplayed pop-up. In the next at-bat, Jordyn Thomas chopped a grounder to second base and Cristina Clauberg could not make the play. After the bobble by Clauberg, Bren implemented aggressive baserunning and rounded third to score. || UMD 3, UT 0
TOP 5TH | With one out, Oberle continued her hitting tear with a double off the left field fence. Taylor Koehnen and Thomas reached on free-passes from Corynn Miner. With the bases loaded, head coach Leslie Kanter decided to bring Sam Kaye into the circle to relieve Miner. Jayme Langbehn extended the lead for the Bulldogs with a two-out RBI walk. || UMD 4, UT 0
BOT 7TH | With one out, Miner reached on a stand up double to the right center gap. Miner advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Mariah Galhouse.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Corynn Miner, making her 14th start of the year, tossed 4.2 innings and allowed four runs on three hits, including a home run. The right-hander walked four and struck out two, en route to her third loss of the season.
- In the fifth inning, Sam Kaye entered the game with the bases loaded; ultimately did not allow a hit in 2.1 innings pitched, struck out two and walked one.
- Miner reached in all four plate appearances, leading the offense with three hits. The red-shirt junior walked in her first at-bat and doubled in the seventh.
- Lexie Chevalier logged her second multi-hit game of the year.
- Minnesota-Duluth’s Lauren Oberle led the Bulldogs with two hits in four at-bats; the senior scored twice and drove in two RBI on her third inning homer.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Spartans have won 11 of the last 13 games, however, UT’s dropped two of the last three.
- UMD’s home run was the first homer at Naimoli Family Stadium this season.
- Bailey Phillips leads the team with eight hit-by-pitches; in 2019, Phillips led the Spartans’ with 12 HBP’s.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 1ST | The Bulldogs led off the ballgame with consecutive base knocks from Lauren Oberle and Taylor Koehnen. After a fielder’s choice, Jordyn Thomas gave UMD a first inning lead with a single to right field. Thomas entered the afternoon leading the team in RBI. || UMD 1, UT 0
TOP 6TH | After a one-out walk to Oberle, Jessica Bren smashed her third home run of the season to left field. || UMD 3, UT 0
BOT 7TH | Mariah Galhouse led off the inning with a base hit to left field. In the following at-bat, Bailey Phillips lasered the offering down the left field line for a stand up double as Galhouse scored from first base. With one out, Avery Perkins hit a grounder to shortstop and reached base on a throwing error which allowed Phillips to advance to third. After a walk to load the bases, Alexa Russo came in to pinch-hit and used a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half. Stephanie Balmer hit a dribbler to shortstop and Oberle committed her second throwing error of the inning. The error allowed Perkins to score from third and evened the score for Tampa. || UT 3, UMD 3
TOP 8TH | With two outs, Koehnen singled with a rocket up the middle. To continue the two-out rally, Bren logged the go-ahead base hit with a stand up double to right-center field as Koehnen scofed from first base. The Bulldogs extended the lead with an RBI single down the right field line by Thomas. || UMD 5, UT 3
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Mariah Galhouse made the 11th start of her freshman campaign and tossed 7.2 innings, allowing five runs on ten hits. The right-hander received her second straight loss as she struck out two and walked one.
- Sam Kaye entered the game in the eighth inning and recorded an out to stop the Bulldogs’ rally.
- In her fourth start of the season, Mackenzie Allen logged her second multi-hit game.
- Bailey Phillips registered her second multi-hit game of the year as she added her third double of 2020.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Spartans dropped consecutive games for the second time this season; first time since February 2 against Newberry.
- Tampa rallied for three runs in the seventh inning, the most they’ve scored in the final frame all season.
- After a nine-game winning streak, UT has lost three of the last four games.
