Spartans Split in SSC Doubleheader

LAKELAND, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team spilt on Saturday afternoon, however, the Spartans ultimately secured their fourth conference series victory. UT has won ten of the last 11 games overall.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (Game One):
Final: Florida Southern 7 (W: Jenna Weldon, 2-1), Tampa 2 (L: Mariah Galhouse, 6-3)
Records: University of Tampa Spartans (17-6, 8-3 SSC), Florida Southern College Moccasins (8-13, 1-7 SSC)

All-Time Series: The Mocs hold a 77-47 advantage in the all-time series, although, the Spartans have won four of the last six meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 1ST | With one out, Jadin Dewith singled to left field and logged the Moccasins’ first baserunner of the game. Meghan Sexton roped a double to provide FSC with a first inning lead as Dewith sored from first base. || FSC 1, UT 0
TOP 2ND | Bailey Phillips reached on a hit-by-pitch, the junior’s seventh HBP of the season. Phillips advanced into scoring position after a walk to Lexie Chevalier. The Spartans implemented a double steal to move both runners into scoring position. FSC cut off the run at home plate as Sam Kaye reached on a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Emily Proffitt drove in two runs on an error by the FSC right-fielder. || UT 2, FSC 1
BOT 2ND | Celia Higgins led off the inning with a base hit and advanced to second on a single from Kelsey Peck. Alex Mace loaded the bases with a single of her own. With one out, Jessica Bryson evened the score with a base knock to drive in Higgins. Dewith reached on a fielder’s choice as the Spartans recorded an out at home plate. With the bases-loaded, Sexton reclaimed the lead for Florida Southern as the senior logged a two-out two run single. Kensie Green registered the sixth single of the inning and extended the lead as Dewith scored for FSC. || FSC 5, UT 2
BOT 3RD | Florida Southern used back-to-back singles from Higgins and Peck to begin the inning. After a pitching change for Tampa, Mace increased the lead for the Mocs with an RBI single to right-center field. || FSC 6, UT 2
BOT 5TH | Beka Schulte singled to lead off for FSC and Samantha Prosser pinch-ran for Schulte. Prosser advanced on an error from the Spartans and moved to third after a single from Dewith. With two outs and runners at the corners, the Moccasins called for a double steal and it was successful as Prosser scored from third. || FSC 7, UT 2
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Mariah Galhouse made the tenth start of her freshman campaign; the Spring Hill, Fla. native allowed six runs on ten hits and did not allow a walk.
- Sam Kaye came into relief for the Spartans and tossed four innings; the senior struck out four batters and allowed one unearned run.
- Emily Proffitt registered multiple RBI for the second time in the last three games. Additionally, the junior has a base hit in four of the last five games.
- Bailey Phillips leads the team with seven hit-by-pitches; in 2019, Phillips led the Spartans’ with 12 HBP’s.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Spartans were on a nine-game winning streak prior to the loss.
- Tampa allowed a season-high seven runs, while FSC snapped a six-game losing streak.
- Galhouse allowed a season-high in hits and runs given up as the freshman entered the contest with a 1.27 ERA in ten appearances.
- Phillips and Lexie Chevalier recorded their first stolen bases of the year.

TOP 1ST | To lead off the game, Stephanie Balmer used an inside-out swing and tripled to right-center field. Corynn Miner, the Spartans’ starting pitcher, took advantage and helped her cause with an RBI double. || UT 1, FSC 0
TOP 2ND | Avery Perkins, making her second start of the year, reached on an infield single. Mackenzie Allen, in her third start of the season, reached on a free-pass. After a fielder’s choice, Balmer extended the lead for Tampa with an RBI single. || UT 2, FSC 0
BOT 4TH | Meghan Sexton singled to begin the inning and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Maddi Conner cut the lead in half with an RBI double to put the Mocs on the board. || UT 2, FSC 1
TOP 5TH | Miner, entered the game as the team-leader in extra-base hits, laced her second double of the game. With two outs, Maddie Farrell roped a line drive off the third base bag to extend the lead for Tampa. || UT 3, FSC 1
BOT 6TH | Lindsey Wilson led off the inning with a base knock to left field. After a strikeout, Jessica Bryson reached base with her second hit of the game. Sexton singled through the left side to load the bases for FSC. With the bases-juiced, Kensie Green lined a single up the middle and Bryson scored from third. || UT 3, FSC 2
TOP 7TH | With two outs, Miner walked and scored from first base on an RBI double from Mariah Galhouse. Galhouse tallied her 12th RBI of the year which ranks second on the team. || UT 4, FSC 2
BOT 7TH | Bryson led off the inning with her third base knock of the rubber match. With two outs, Green hit a flare into shallow left field and Balmer attempted to make the play but could not contain the fly ball. The single from Green allowed Bryson to score from first base as the ball trickled away from Balmer. || UT 4, FSC 3
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Corynn Miner, the SSC leader in victories, tallied her 12th win of the year. The red-shirt junior tossed a complete game for the 11th time this season. In seven innings pitched, Miner allowed three runs on ten hits while she struck out four batters.
- Four Spartans registered multi-hits, including Balmer, Miner, Galhouse and Farrell.
- Miner and Galhouse totaled two doubles a piece in the rubber match.
- Florida Southern’s Jessica Bryson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a double.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Spartans scored a first-inning run for the 12th time this year. Tampa’s undefeated in all 12 games in which they have scored a first-inning run.
- Tampa has won all four conference series, including victories in ten of the last 11 games overall.
- The two programs logged five RBI with two outs, however, they combined to leave 15 runners on base.
