TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa men’s soccer team capped off their season with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Saint Leo. Two Spartans tallied two goals apiece in the final match of the season. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Final: Tampa 4, Saint Leo 0

Records: University of Tampa Spartans (3-7-4, 3-6-1 SSC) vs. Saint Leo Lions (3-13, 0-10 SSC) 

Location: Pepin Stadium || Tampa, Fla.

All-time Series: Tampa dominates the series with 35 victories to only 13 losses. In 48 matches, the two programs have never ended in a tie.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1st Half | The Spartans wasted no time as Juancho Fernandez gave UT a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute, off an assist from Jan Walker. Rojay Smith tallied his first goal of the season in the 31st minute to provide Tampa with a two-goal advantage. Jake Richards logged three of his seven saves in the first half.

2nd Half | Julius Becker receieved a yellow card in the 50th minute as Becker shoved a Saint Leo defender. Smith tacked on his second goal of the season in the 60th minute to give UT a three-goal lead. Entering tonight’s match, Marcel Salokat led the team in points (15) and goals scored (6). Following a second goal by Fernandez in the 73rd minute, the junior from Oviedo, Spain finished the season as the leader in goals (8) and points (18). Joey Bajza was charged with a yellow card in the 84th minute. 

INSIDE THE STATS: 

• This was the first match of the regular season decided by more than one goal.
• It was the second multi-goal performance for Fernandez this season. 
• Richards moved into sixth place in UT history with 173 saves, after accumulating seven saves in the second consecutive game. He logged at least six saves in six matches this season. 
• Richards will finish the year as the leader in the SSC with 72 saves, and he’ll rank fourth with a .750 save percentage.
