Men’ Lacrosse to Host Fundraising Event for Vs. Cancer Foundation
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa lacrosse team will once again be partnering with the Vs. Cancer Foundation this season to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer. The fundraiser will last throughout the season, but the teams will celebrate their efforts on Sunday, October 28 with the Lacrosse Vs. Cancer NCAA D2 Showcase. Participating in the showcase will be college lacrosse programs from Tampa, St. Leo, Florida Tech, Rollins, Palm Beach Atlantic, Lynn, and Flagler. The IMG Academy will also be participating. All games will be played at the Naimoli Family Intramural and Athletic Complex. The tournament started with the team at Tampa wanting to run a Florida tournament where local college programs could come together during the fall ball season and thought it would be a great opportunity to make it a fundraising initiative.
In partnership with Vs. Cancer, fifty percent of the money raised will fund national brain tumor research efforts, the deadliest form of childhood cancer, while the other half will go directly to the pediatric oncology unit at Tampa General Hospital.
The Vs. Cancer Foundation was founded in 2012 by childhood cancer survivor Chase Jones, who was a collegiate baseball player at the University of North Carolina during the time of his diagnosis. The support of his teammates during treatment was his largest source of strength, which Vs. Cancer now provides to kids all across the U.S. by working with college athletic teams. Vs. Cancer was built by athletes for athletes, giving them the platform to raise money for childhood cancer.
