McKiel and Houghton Earn 2018 South Region Crossover All-Tournament Team
ORLANDO, Fla. (October 22, 2018) – The 2018 South Region Crossover All-Tournament Team has been selected, tournament officials announced Monday morning. Voting on the All-Tournament Team is conducted by head coaches of the Sunshine State Conference and Gulf South Conference.
This year’s team features 11 student-athletes from the Sunshine State Conference and three from the Gulf South Conference. Repeating from the 2017 All-Tournament Team are Sorrel Houghton of Tampa, as well as Olivia Roa of Embry-Riddle.
Over the weekend UT went 3-0 at the South Region Crossover, advancing their winning streak to 17 games in a row. The team defeated both Valdosta State and Lee University in four sets before moving on to defeat the No. 12 University of West Florida in a five-set thriller. Over the three-game span, Katie McKiel had a total of 49 kills and an average hitting percentage of .239, while fellow pin hitter, Sorrel Houghton, earned 54 kills at a .315 kill percentage. The Spartans advanced their overall record to 23-1 and still remain undefeated in the Sunshine State Conference.

The 2018 South Region Crossover featured 24 teams squaring up in 36 matches over the course of two days. The Gulf South Conference saw all 12 membership teams participate, while the Sunshine State Conference included all 11 member institutions as well as the addition of Spring Hill College as the No. 12 seed. The event took place on October 19 and 20 at the Orlando Sports Center, marking the second time the tournament has been held at the facility. In all, the Sunshine State Conference won 27 matches, while the Gulf South Conference pulled in nine wins on the weekend.
