David Lebron Named First-Team All-American; South Region Pitcher of the Year
TAMPA, Fla. – Pitcher David Lebron was recognized as a first-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association of America (NCBWA) while also being pegged as the ABCA/Rawlings South Region Pitcher of the Year.
Joining Lebron as a first-team all-region selection is fellow pitcher Keven Pimentel as the duo represent the lone Spartans on the first team. Second-team selections for the Spartans third baseman Darren Miller, outfielder Nick DeTringo and relief pitcher Mark Moclair.
Lebron, a senior from Homestead, Fla., turned in a dominant campaign as he finished the season with a 10-0 record to go with a 2.24 ERA. In 96.1 innings, the righty registered 139 strikeouts. This marks the second straight season where he was named the South Region Pitcher of the Year. He also becomes a two-time All-American. He concludes his two-year Spartan career with a record of 17-1. He struck out 242 hitters with a 2.45 ERA. He ranks 10th on UT’s all-time strikeout list and is third among two-year players.
Pimentel, a junior from Huntington Station, N.Y., concluded his first season as a Spartan after transferring from the University of Miami. He was 9-2 on the year, with a 2.42 ERA. In 78.0 innings of work, the right-hander had 63 strikeouts. He also joined Lebron as first-team all-Sunshine State Conference selections.
A senior third baseman from Key West, Fla., Miller led all Spartans with a .365 batting average. The 2017 All-American also connected on eight home runs and drove in 45. He was also honored as a first-team all-SSC selection, marking the second straight year he earned that award.
DeTringo, a junior outfielder from Ruskin, Fla., was among the top hitters on the team as he wrapped up the season with a .348 average. He hit nine home runs, drove in 35 runs and also finished with 14 stolen bases. He was also among the Spartans who received first-team all-SSC recognition.
Moclair, a junior reliever from Seffner, Fla., earns all-region honors for the first time in his career. Also a second-team all-SSC selection, the flame-thrower proved hard to hit as he struck out 92 hitters in 55.2 innings. In 2018, he was 6-2 with seven saves. His 1.78 ERA was first among all Spartans.
