WINTER PARK, Fla. – Groniger Custom Homes has been awarded the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) Platinum certification after successfully meeting the sustainability standards established in the FGBC Homes Certification program.

The home at 2711 Woodside Ave. in Winter Park, Fla. achieved 227 points out of a possible 300, earning it the Platinum level designation, the highest green achievement for a single-family home.

“The home serves as a model of sustainability for Orange County residents,” said C.J. Davila, FGBC Executive Director. “The home sets the example of how our individual choices impact the ecological balance of our communities, while also providing a healthier home.”

With an exclusive focus on Florida, FGBC is by far the largest certifier of residential and commercial construction, master-planned communities and local governments in the Sunshine State with over 21,400 since 2000.

FGBC Certifying Agent Bill Kachman of Deland, Fla. worked on the project to verify compliance to FGBC standards.

“The designation represents achievements in a number of categories, such as energy efficiency, water conservation, site preservation, indoor air quality, materials, and durability, including disaster mitigation,” noted Kachman.

FGBC’s five certifications provide pathways to green building and sustainability such as national and international standards like USGBC LEED and Green Globes that also move contractors towards environmentally friendly building.

But, “Florida Green” standards take a scientific approach and are developed with state-specific criteria.

They address Florida’s hot-humid environment, distinctive topography, unique geology, resiliency and natural disasters. Beyond third party certifications, FGBC is also a resource for the construction industry and municipalities when considering going green.

FGBC-certified homes complete a technically rigorous building assessment and construction
process to promote design and construction practices that reduce the negative environmental impacts of the building, improve occupant health and well-being, and reduce operating costs for the owner.

Green certified homes may have substantially lower utility bills, and may qualify for advantageous financing, lower insurance rates and government incentives. Through its commitment to
green homebuilding, Groniger Custom Homes is helping to keep homeownership affordable.

The 4,165 square-foot home, (2,491 with air and heat) was built on an Infill site with Florida Native features, no irrigation. The home was built for empty nesters with an open floor plan, concrete stained floors and two apartments upstairs for when the children and their families visit.

A small solar system with innovations in insulation and wireless control systems makes this a very affordable home with minimal maintenance.

Two decades ago, FGBC brought together industry professionals from the construction, government, academic and research communities to create green standards tailored specifically to Florida.
