TAMPA, Fla.. – The No. 1 University of Tampa Spartans suffered a Wednesday evening setback at the hands of NCAA South Region opponent Valdosta State University.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

All-time Series: Then Spartans continue to lead the all-time series by a mark of 33-22. The Blazers are now winners of three straight on the road over the Spartans.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Blazers led off the game with a triple off the bat of Josh Broughton, who would score the game’s first run on an RBI groundout by Logan Stephens.
• UT would grab the lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Nick Derr. UT would cross its second run on a Nick DeTringo sacrifice fly.
• Danny Sirven would extend the Spartan lead to 3-1 on a third-inning RBI  single that scored Dsnny Blair.
• A pair of big innings by the Blazers would doom the Spartans as VSU scored four in the fourth and then extended its advantage to 8-3 with a three-run ninth inning.

INSIDE THE STATS:

• Cole Perry led the way at the plate, collecting three hits while scoring one run.
• Also registering a pair of hits was Sirven, who added a run and RBI as well.
• UT’s starting pitcher Bo Weiss took his first loss of the year as he threw 3.2 innings, allowing four hits, four runs and striking out two.

OUTSIDE THE BOX:

• Torrealba increased his hitting streak to 14 games as the junior outfielder is half-way to Craig Corrado’s school-record 28-game streak in 2006-07.
• The one through four spots in UT’s lineup were a combined 1-for-13 with four strikeouts..

UP NEXT:

Tampa hits the road for a stiff Sunshine State Conference test in a three-game series at No. 20 Barry University. The Buccaneers sit atop the SSC with a 9-3 league showing while the Spartans are three-games back in the win column at 6-3.
