UT Swimming Set for Final Home Meet of 2019-20 Season

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa men’s and women’s swimming teams will host Indian River State College in its final home and regular-season event of the season.

Men’s Matchup: No. 14 University of Tampa Spartans vs. Indian River State College Pioneers

Women’s Matchup: No. 8 University of Tampa Spartans vs. Indian River State College Pioneers

Date/Time: Friday, January 17 at 12:00 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Spartans picked up a pair of dual meet victories on the road last week, defeating Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Tech and Keiser University.

About the Spartans: Tampa’s men are a perfect 6-0 in dual meets while also taking first place at the four-day Spartan Invite in December. Senior Brett Saunders led the way for Tampa with six first-place finishes in victories against Florida Tech and Keiser. Against the Panthers, Saunders opened the meet as part of a first-place 400 Medley Relay finish with a time of 3:27.24. The Newark, Delaware native also took the 200 Free in 1:42.81 and the 200 Breast with a time of 2:06.49. He returned to the pool the following day as part of a winning 200 Medley Relay of 1:32.83. Saunders proceeded to win the 400 IM after being clocked at 4:01.73 and the 100 Breast in 56.40. The weekly award is the fourth of his career.

UT’s women are 5-1 in dual meets and placed second at the Spartan Invite. Elizaveta Bazarova had five first-place finishes in pair of Tampa road wins at Florida Tech and Keiser University. The Russian helped her team to wins in the 400 Medley Relay in 3:58.48 and the 400 Free Relay in 3:39.30. She also took the 50 Free after being clocked at 23.85, an NCAA “B” qualifying time. Against Keiser, Bazarova topped the 200 Free with a time of 1:55.25. Bazarova later championed the 100 Free in 52.06, which also bests the NCAA “B” qualifying time.

About the Pioneers: IRSC’s men were third at the Spartan Invite and enter the meet with a dual record of 5-0. The Pioneers most recently defeated Illinois College on January 7. The Pioneer women also competed with UT at the Spartan Invite, concluding the four-day event in third place overall. IRSC owns a 5-0 dual meet record on the season.

Indian River is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Tampa Seniors: UT will recognize its seniors prior to the meet, which includes a group of nine men and two women competing in their final meet at the UT Aquatics Center. The men’s seniors include Kellen BroaderickLuke HeneAaron James, Syd OdentAndre RichardsonDominic RussoBrett SaundersAustin Simpson and Brian Valedon. The women’s seniors are Torey Brierley and Molly O’Hara.
