ICYMI – In case you missed it, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, tennis, baseball and softball were in action this week.
Women’s basketball was at home on Wednesday as they welcomed in the Eckerd College Tritons into the Martinez Center. The Tritons were controlling much of the game before the Spartans used a strong comeback to pull out a 66-60 victory in overtime. Dori Nagy led the way with 18 points and Kris Nelson was right behind her with 16. On Saturday Tampa was on the road as they played against the Rollins College Tars. The Spartans would win the game 70-58 as Melijah Sullivan led the way scoring a career-high 29 points.
Men’s basketball was in action with a pair of games this week. On Wednesday the men would defeat Eckerd by a final of 78-61. UT would use a strong finish to the game as they outscored EC 27-10 over the last 10 minutes of the contest. Pat Bacon finished the game with 25 points, while Derrick Felder picked up 24 points in the win. On Saturday the men were in Winter Park to take on Rollins. The Tars used a strong second half to pull out an 87-74 victory.
Baseball opened up its 2020 season with three home games. In the season opener against the University of Mount Olive, the Spartans fell by a final of 11-3. Jose Cadenas and Luke McDonald would each hit a home run. On Saturday the Spartans picked up their first win of the season as they defeated Queens University of Charlotte 9-6. Jacinto Arredondo would pick up the win for the Spartans, as he threw five innings, striking out eight batters. On Sunday, UT would fall to Georgia College by a final score of 11-3.
Softball opened their season up on Saturday as they faced Ursuline College in a doubleheader. The Spartans would win the first game by a final score of 4-0. Corynn Miner would pick up the win in the first game as she only allowed one hit over five innings pitched. She would also pick up two hits and two RBI in the game. In the second game, UT would win 2-0 as Mariah Galhouse would earn the victory in her first collegiate game. She would go six innings, allowing four hits and striking out three hitters. Galhouse and Miner would each pick up an RBI in the victory. On Sunday, Tampa would have a doubleheader against Newberry College. The Spartans would drop both games to the Wolves, losing the first game 3-1 and the second game 4-1.
Tennis opened up their spring season as they hosted the UT Invitational, welcoming in No. 18 Florida Southern College, St. Petersburg College and St. Mary’s University. The Spartans posted an overall record of 9-15, going 7-9 in singles play and 2-6 in doubles play. Ekaterina Grib made her Spartan debut in the No. 1 slot as she went 2-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles play.
THIS WEEK
Men’s golf will be in Melbourne as they will participate in the Titan Winter Invitational. Rounds one and two will be Monday, while the final round will take place on Tuesday.
Tennis will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on State College of Florida at the UT Tennis Complex. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
Women’s basketball will host a pair of games in the Martinez Center. Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. the Spartans will play against the Saint Leo Lions. On Saturday at 2:00 p.m. the Spartans will square off against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish.
Men’s basketball will also be in action for a pair of home games. Wednesday at 7:30 UT faces off against Saint Leo, while Saturday at 4:00 p.m. the Spartans will play PBA.
Softball will be on the road over the weekend as they travel to Saint Augustine for the Old Coast Classic. UT will play two games on Friday as they play Valdosta State at 10:00 a.m. and Flagler at 12:30 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday the Spartans will play one game a day against Wingate. Saturday’s game is set for 4:30 p.m. while Sunday is set for 12:30 p.m.
Baseball will be back at home over the weekend as they host Post University in a three-game series. Friday the two teams will play at 6:00 p.m., Saturday the teams will start at 3:00 p.m. and the series finale will be on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
Women’s lacrosse begins their 2020 season on Friday night as they play the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Naimoli Field.
Men’s lacrosse opens their season up at home on Saturday as they face Queens University of Charlotte. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
