The Tampa Rundown – University of Tampa Athletics

ICYMI – In case you missed it, volleyball, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s swimming, and rowing were all in action this past week.

Volleyball started the week in Lakeland as they faced off against Florida Southern. After dropping the first set, UT would bounce back with three straight victories to win the match. Over the weekend, they had two road games in South Florida as they played against Lynn and Nova Southeastern. Against Lynn, the Fighting Knights used a strong defensive performance as the Spartans fell 3-1. Against Nova, Tampa won the first set before dropping the next three.

Women’s soccer wrapped up their regular season at home on Wednesday as they faced Florida Southern. The Mocs had an offensive explosion as they defeated the Spartans 4-0.

Women’s basketball held a tournament at home as they played against Spring Hill and West Georgia. Against Spring Hill all five starters would score double digits as the Spartans were able to claim the 78-46 victory. Kris Nelson led the way as she had 18 points in the game. Against West Georgia, the two teams played a tight game as the Wolves came out on top with a 69-67 victory.

Men’s basketball was on the road in Alabama, as they played Montevallo and Alabama-Huntsville. The team would drop both games as Montevallo won 72-64 on Saturday and then on Sunday the Spartans lost to #16 Alabama-Huntsville 75-68.

Cross Country ran in the NCAA South Regional hosted in Lakeland. The women’s team finished in second place overall, as Zoe Jarvis and Monika Brill each earned top 10 finishes. The men would run a strong race as they would end their season with an eighth-place finish at the regional. With the second-place finish, the Spartan women will advance to the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

Men’s and women’s swimming were in action as they both faced nationally ranked Nova Southeastern. Against #9 NSU, the men’s team would claim the victory 142.5-119.5. The women raced against the 4th team in the nation as they would end up falling 152-110.

Rowing competed at the Head of the South over the weekend in Augusta, Ga. In the Women’s 1x, Cassie Bricker had a time of 24:18.3 to finish in first place. The Spartans Women’s Varsity 4 team of Juliette Vick, Marissa Henderson, Sienna Gutierrez, Kayla Bell and Sarah Manno were timed at 20:08.2 in a fourth-place finish. Erin Winslow, Grace McGhee, Abbey Grau, Kiara Williams and Lauren Blake finished in 20:45 to place sixth place. UT’s Women’s Varsity Double 2x of Erin Hanson and Bridget Maxwell finished second overall with a time of 21:09.5.

This Week:

Women’s soccer will play tonight in the Sunshine State Conference tournament as they face off against Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. If the Spartans win, they would then face Barry in the SSC semifinals on Thursday in Miami Shores.

Volleyball will play their last two regular-season games at home, as they welcome in Embry-Riddle and Florida Tech. The game on Friday against Embry-Riddle will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the game Saturday will begin at 4:00 p.m. Saturday’s game will mark senior night for the Spartans.

Men’s basketball has two games this weekend as they will play in a tournament in St. Leo. Saturday at noon UT will face off against Flagler and on Sunday the Spartans will play Georgia College at noon.
