The Tampa Rundown – University of Tampa Athletics
ICYMI: In Case You Missed It, last week softball went a perfect 5-0, defeating Saint Michael’s and Minnesota–Crookston on Wednesday before going on to sweep the Nova Southeastern Sharks in the weekend series. Baseball also won their weekend series against the No. 20 Barry University Buccaneers, 3-0. Men’s lacrosse found success on the turf, handily defeating the Colorado Mesa Mavericks 19-6, before earning their first conference win of the season in a 25-8 blow out over the Embry-Riddle Eagles. On Thursday, the Spartan tennis team defeated the University of New Haven 7-0. Beach volleyball competed in the Florida Atlantic Beach Bash. On Friday, the squad took home a 3-2 win over North Alabama, then on Saturday the sandy Spartans fell to No. 8 FIU 4-1, and No. 16 FAU 5-0. Also over the weekend both the men’s and women’s track teams competed in the Bulls Invitational hosted by USF. In all of the races, there were nine women who finished in the top ten, while on the men’s side there were eight top ten finishes. Rowing finished fourth in the women’s varsity 4+, they took home silver in the women’s lightweight 4+ and finished in the top five in the women’s novice 8+. Finally, men’s golf finished the weekend fifth at the Bob Writz Invitational in Lakewood, Colorado.
This Week’s Events:
Baseball:
This weekend, baseball is set to host the Lynn University Fighting Knights in the weekend series on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s game will begin at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, the Spartans will play a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Beach Volleyball:
The sandy Spartans will take the road this weekend, traveling to Atlanta, Georgia to compete at the Georgia State Diggin’ Duals. The Spartans are scheduled to play UNC-Wilmington at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, followed by a 3:00 p.m. dual against Alabama-Birmingham. On Saturday, the Spartans will face the College of Charleston at 8:00 a.m., and host, Georgia State, at 4:00 p.m.
Men’s Lacrosse:
Men’s lacrosse will continue conference play, hosting Florida Tech Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. This game will take place at Pepin Stadium. Then on Saturday Tampa will travel to Old Westbury, N.Y., to take on the NYIT Bears for a 7:30 p.m. showdown.
Softball:
Softball looks to continue their 12-game winning streak in Daytona Beach this weekend against the Embry-Riddle Eagles. On Friday, the Spartans will play in a doubleheader, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. respectively. On Saturday, UT will play ERAU at 11:00 a.m.
Tennis:
Tennis will play three matches this week. Today, the Spartans are set to host the Nova Southeastern Sharks at 3:00 p.m. UT will then face Broward College on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in Fort Lauderdale. On Sunday, they will head to Boca Raton to take on the Lynn Fighting Knights.
Track:
Both the men’s and women’s track teams are set to compete at the Pepsi Florida Relays hosted by the University of Florida in Gainesville. Races will take place all day on Thursday and all day on Friday.
Women’s Golf:
The women’s golf team is competing today and tomorrow in the Barry Invitational at Don Shula’s Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Florida.
Women’s Lacrosse
After a week of rest, the No. 10 Spartans return home to kick off SSC competition on Wednesday against conference rival, Florida Southern. The first draw control against the Moccasins is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, the Spartans will travel to Marietta, Georgia where they will face Yong Harris at 4:00 p.m. This game will be played at Kell High School.
