As part of The Kiwanis Club of Tampa’s 100th anniversary celebration, the Tampa Kiwanis Foundation awarded a grant of $100,000 to a local not-for-profit organization. The grant criteria was that it must be used to improve the early childhood development and/or early childhood school readiness of Hillsborough County children and must be for a capital expense and/or new program development to build additional capacity.
“We are pleased to announce that the recipient of the Tampa Kiwanis 100th Anniversary $100,000 Grant is: The Evolution Institute – an organization that targets working with students in East Tampa that are at risk for academic failure,” explained Mr. Dave Rogoff, President Tampa Kiwanis Foundation. “This approach is a means of reaching the long term goal of locally breaking the cycle of poverty.”
Accepting the award on behalf of The Evolution Institute was Dr. Jerry Miller, the Executive Director of the Evolution Institute, and Ms. Michelle Shimberg, Board V.P.
The Evolution Institute will use the grant to expand their early child development programming and the space for these programs. They have a tuition-free school, The East Tampa Academy, for 4-8 year old children – a school that is demonstrating excellent outcomes in academic performance with most of the children at or above grade level. In addition, they train other organizations serving the young children in East Tampa on how to infuse resiliency skills in these children.
“We were extremely impressed by the application of The Evolution Institute, not just for their proven outcomes but also their approach of working with community partners such as Feeding Tampa Bay and the Tampa Housing Authority to take a holistic approach to the needs of the children and families of East Tampa,” said Tampa Kiwanis Foundation Treasurer Mr. Bob Singleton.
Kiwanis Club of Tampa is celebrating their 100th year of public service impacting the local Tampa community. Originally chartered on October 24th, 1919, they are the oldest Kiwanis Club in the state of Florida.
