Tampa Tennis Falls to Nationally Ranked Flagler

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa Spartans welcomed the nationally ranked Flagler College Saints to a Sunday showdown at the Naimoli and Young Family Tennis Complex. Tampa won one match in both singles and doubles putting up a valiant fight against a tough opponent.

How it Happened:

The Spartans had a fast start as the #1 doubles pair of Ekaterina Grib and Savannah Williams took down the Saint’s #1 doubles 6-1.

Flagler’s #2 and #3 doubles held their own, defeating Tampa 6-3 and 6-4.

Flagler’s #5 Singles Florencia Massardo Brain was scratched from the lineup. Alessandra Traub was shifted up to the fifth spot and Paloma Martinez featured as the Saint’s #6 player.

Tampa’s Dakota Busch dominated Flagler’s Martinez winning 6-0, 6-2. Busch now has a 3-0 singles record this season, losing only three games in her last two matches.

Flagler clinched the victory with #2 singles Lixin Wang’s 6-4, 6-2 victory over Tampa’s Williams.

Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year Eden Schlafenhauf bested Grib at #1 singles in the only match to split the first two sets. The So. German Schlafenhauf won versus the So. Belarusian Grib 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 1-0 (10-6).
Up Next: Tampa plays away on 2/15 facing off at #5 Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale. This is the first match of a three match road series for the Spartans.
