Tampa Sweeps Rollins in SSC Match
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa Spartans held their dig pink match, as they hosted the Rollins College Tars in the Bob Martinez Athletics Center. The Spartans won the match in three sets, improving their record to 16-6 and 9-2 in the SSC. Rollins falls to 6-14 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rollins was able to get on the board first over Tampa as Riley Spurlin recorded a kill. The two teams remained close early on in the set as the Spartans held a one-point lead over the Tars at 6-5. UT would then go on a run on RC, scoring the next 11 of 13 points to take a 17-7 lead. UT would close the set out with a 25-15 victory, as Nicole Dominguez recorded a service ace. In the set Tampa held Rollins to a .167 percentage, and the Spartans recorded four service aces.
In the second set, the two teams were closer as the Spartans held a two-point lead at 12-10. The two teams would continue to play the set tight, as the score remained within two at 21-19. UT would go on to score the next four of five points to close the set out at 25-20.
The third set was like the second, as the two teams were close throughout set. The two teams were within three points with Tampa holding a slim 19-16 lead. The Spartans were able to close the door on the Tars scoring the next six of seven points, winning the set 25-17.
INSIDE THE STATS
- Katie McKiel led the way for Tampa as she racked up 13 kills.
- Melissa Elias and Sammy Mueller served as the catalyst for the offense as they dished out 20 and 18 assists respectively.
- Nicole Dominguez collected a team-high 19 digs.
- As a team, the Spartans swung at a .314 percentage while holding the Tars .103 percentage.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- The Spartans improve their record over the Tars to 91-6 all-time.
- Tampa has now won 11 games overall.
- Nine different Spartans recorded kills in the game.
UP NEXT
The Spartans will be back on the road as they travel to St. Petersburg to take on the Eckerd College Tritons. This will be their second meeting of the year, as UT won the first match in three sets.
