Tampa Drops Doubleheader to Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team battled throughout the double-header, but Rollins ultimately swept the Spartans in Saturday’s twin-bill.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):
Final: Rollins 1 (W: Abby Summers, 5-0), Tampa 0 (L: Makaleigh Dooley, 8-3)

All-Time Series: Tampa leads 63-50, but UT has dropped the last four meetings against the Tars.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 1st: Jordan Davis singled on a perfectly-placed bunt and advanced into scoring position on a stolen base. Lindsay Gehring drove the ball to deep right field, just past the out-reaching glove, which scored Davis and gave Rollins an early lead.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Dooley made her 10th start of the season and she’s gone the distance in nine starts.
- Rollins’ pitcher, Abby Summers, recorded 14 strikeouts in the contest. In six appearances, the senior’s averaging 12 strikeouts per seven innings.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Emalee Jansen led off for the Spartans for the first time this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 5th: With two runners in scoring position and two outs, the Spartans chose to intentionally walk Ashley Worrell. With the bases loaded, Lindsay Gehring poked the pitch in between shortstop and third base. The two-run infield single was fielded by Stephanie Balmer, who threw home but the Rollins base-runner avoided the tag. The next batter, Grace Street, doubled to left-center field which scored Worrell and extended the lead to 3-0.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Sam Worrell started in the circle for the second time as a Spartan.
- The Spartans only struck out one time in the contest. In nine games this season, UT has struckout two times or less.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Tampa had not been swept in a three-game series since April 8-9, 2016 against then-ranked No. 4 Saint Leo.
UP NEXT: The University of Tampa is set to host Flagler on Tuesday, March 5, as the double-header is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
