Tampa Concludes Opening Weekend with Split

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Tampa’s beach volleyball team wrapped up play at the Florida State Tournament as they played Houston Baptist University and No. 2 Florida State University. Tampa would split the final day of competition as they defeated Houston Baptist and dropped the match to Florida State. 

DUAL 1:

In an early Sunday match, UT squared off against HBU for the first contest of the day. The Spartans were able to claim the victory 4-1, as all four victories came in straight sets. The team of Erica Haslag and Tatiana Gutierrez continued their undefeated season in the four spot, as they took the matches 21-7 and 21-13. The lone Spartan loss came in three sets.

1. Julia Oswald/Rachel Rosequist (UT) def. Tori Hinojosa/Danielle Okeke (HBU) 21-16, 21-15 

2. Natalie Bennett/Elsa Descamps (HBU) def. Bri Civiero/Valerie Rosequist (UT) 17-21, 22-20, 15-13 

3. Katie McKiel/Melissa Elias (UT) def. Lauren Huggins/Maddie Butters (HBU) 21-16, 21-17 

4. Erica Haslag/Tatiana Gutierrez (UT) def. Brennan Miller/Amy Underdown (HBU) 21-17, 21-13 

5. Selina Pfuner/Claire Overton (UT) def. Alison Stanfill/Lindsay Harris (HBU) 21-19, 24-22 Match 

Notes: Order of finish: Doubles (4,1,3,5,2);

DUAL 2:

In the second match of the day, Tampa would face the the second ranked Florida State Seminoles to wrap up the tournament. In the one spot, the team of Julia Oswald and Rachel Rosequist would win the first set over the Seminoles one’s. This would be the first set the FSU duo would drop all season. In the third set, the two were close throughout, however the Seminoles duo were able to go on a run to spoil the upset bid.

4. Liz Waters-Leiga/Payton Caffrey (FS) def. Erica Haslag/Tatiana Gutierrez (UT) 21-15, 21-14

5. Ashley Robert/Lexi McKeown (FS) def. Selina Pfuner/Claire Overton (UT) 21-14, 21-15

 

Notes Order of finish: (2,4,5,3,1)

UP NEXT: Tampa will be in action next weekend as they head to Florida International University, participating in the FIU Beach Bash. UT will have four games playing against Webber International and Missouri State on Friday and San Diego City and Florida International on Saturday.
