Spartans Split Road Matchup With Top-10 Sharks

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The University of Tampa men’s and women’s swimming teams traveled to meet Sunshine State Conference opponent Nova Southeastern University in a matchup of NCAA Division II heavyweights, with UT taking the men’s race while the Sharks prevailed on the women’s side.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Men’s Final: No. 13 Tampa Spartans 142.5, No. 9 Nova Southeastern Sharks 119.5
Women’s Final: No. 4 Nova Southeastern Sharks 152, No. 6 Tampa Spartans 110

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The meet totaled 28 events, including 14 for the men and 14 for the women.
- Tampa’s women took first in four of the races.
- The Spartan men took seven first-place finishes, including the crucial final relay.
- The Spartan men did not get a first-place finish until event 10.
TOP PERFORMERS (MEN):
- Senior Brett Saunders won the 100 Breast with a time of 58.32. Saunders would take his second first-place performance of the meet in the 200 Back at 1:51.65. Another top finish was registered by Saunders as he took the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.69.
- Tampa took the top two spots in the 50 Free, led by Aaron James (21.00) and Yannick Smith (21.22).
- Mikael Haugen was the top racer in the 100 Free with a time of 46.26 as UT also received a second-place finish from Smith at 46.74.
- The 200 Breast had a pair of Spartans finish 1-2, led by Grant Ruster at 2:10.26. Gabe Parnell was second at 2:10.52.
- Tampa put a stamp on its victory with a first-place finish in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:04.92. The winning team included Haugen, James, Smith and Jared Fitzgerald.
TOP PERFORMERS (WOMEN):
- UT had a first-place performance from Hana van Loock in the 200 Free as she was clocked at 1:54.71. van Loock would later win the 100 Free in a time of 51.65.
- Elizaveta Bazarova took first in the 100 Breast at 1:04.61 as she edged teammate and second-place finisher Julia Augustsson, who came in at 1:06.31.
- Augustsson had a first-place finish of her own with a time of 2:23.29 in the 200 Breast.
UP NEXT:
Tampa hosts the annual Spartan Invite on December 16-19, which takes place at the Clearwater Aquatic Center.
