Spartans Spilt, Secure Series Victory
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team spilt the double-header against Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon, and ultimately won the series over the Moccasins.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):
Final: Tampa 2 (W: Makaleigh Dooley 8-0), Florida Southern 1 (L: Kelli Gault 0-4)
Records: University of Tampa Spartans (10-2, 4-1 SSC), Florida Southern College Moccasins (3-6, 1-4 SSC)
Location: Naimoli Family Field || Tampa, Fla.
All-Time Series: Tampa trails in the series 75-46, however UT has won five of the last six games against FSC.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 4th: With two outs, Dooley reached base on an infield single as the shortstop went to her back-hand side but could not make the play. Maddie Farrell stepped to the plate and scored Dooley from first base on an RBI double to right center field.
TOP 6th: The Moccasins connected on two extra-base hits to tie the game at one apiece. Sam Prosser doubled to right center field, and came around to score on an RBI triple from Celia Higgins. Corynn Miner came in relief with the go-ahead run standing at third base. After allowing a walk to Taylor Davis, Miner worked out of the jam with a groundball to third base.
BOT 7th: Emalee Jansen led off the inning with a base-knock to the opposite field and advanced to second on a bunt from Stephanie Balmer. Cristina Clauberg attempted to sacrifice the runners into scoring position, however, she swung away with two strikes and drove in the game-winning run with a single to right field.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Sam Worrell made her first start as a Spartan; the senior struck out four batters in 5.2 innings, and she allowed one run on three hits.
- After five innings, Worrell allowed one hit and delivered four perfect innings.
- In the 7th inning, Dooley made her first relief appearance of the year and secured the victory as the offense scored in the bottom half.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- It was the third multi-hit game for Clauberg this season.

Final: Florida Southern 3 (W: Aubrey Ehlers 3-3), Tampa 1 (L: Makaleigh Dooley 8-1) – (8 Innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 2nd: Lexie Chevalier led off the inning with a double to center field and the next two batters reached via fielders choice. With the bases loaded, Bailey Phillips came through for the Spartans on a sacrifice fly to center field.
TOP 3rd: The Moccasins peppered away with three singles before Jessica Trana sliced a base-knock down the left field line, which scored Taylor Davis from second base to even the score.
TOP 8th: With two runners on and two outs, Celia Higgins drove in the go-ahead run with a poke to center field and Miner‘s throw to home was just off line. Higgins advanced to second on the throw and Florida Southern loaded the bases with an intentional walk to Zierra Flodman. Jessica Trana worked a walk which provided the Moccasins with an extra insurance run and extended the lead to 3-1.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Dooley made her eighth start of the year and struck out four batters in 7.2 innings of work. The senior allowed three runs on 15 hits, the most she’s allowed in her career.
- In 55.2 innings pitched, Dooley has only allowed two walks. The other walk was allowed on Feb. 15 against Eckerd College.
- Maddie Farrell caught a runner stealing for the third time this season and she’s thrown out 17 runners in her career.
- Chevalier logged the first three-hit game of the season for UT.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- It was the fourth multi-hit game for Clauberg this season and she leads the team with 11 hits in 32 at-bats.
UP NEXT: The University of Tampa will travel to Rollins College next weekend for a three-game slate, as first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, March 1.
