Spartans Send Seniors Out With Victory

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa men’s and women’s swimming teams concluded their home season while defeating Indian River State College in the final regular-season meet of the 2019-20 season.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Men’s Final: No. 14 Tampa Spartans 178, Indian River State Pioneers 81
Women’s Final: No. 8 Tampa Spartans 169, Indian River State Pioneers 91

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The meet totaled 28 events, including 14 for the men and 14 for the women.
  • Tampa’s women won 11 events, including one of two relays.
  • The Spartan men took first in 11 races, including both relays.

TOP PERFORMERS (MEN):

  • UT took the 200 Medley Relay to start the men’s action, with Luke Hene, Brett Saunders, Andre Richardson and Aaron James being timed at 1:31.50.
  • Marcos Hillje-Enthoven was first in the 1,000 Free with a time of 9:42.66.
  • Hene was the first of three Spartans in the 100 Back as he finished in 51.27. Also making up the top three was Mikael Haugen and Dominic RussoHene would later take his second individual race of the day, winning the 100 Fly in 51.03.
  • Saunders won the 100 Breast in 56.99 ahead of teammates Marvin Slanschek and Youssef KhowessahSaunders would later win the 200 Breast with a time of 2:05.60 and the 200 IM in 1:51.36.
  • Senior Aaron James took first in the 50 Free after finishing the race in 21.11.
  • The 100 Free had Spartans in the top three, led by Jared Fitzgerald‘s winning time of 46.16. Yannick Smith and Haugen were second and third respectively.
  • Freshman Brian Daugherty was the 500 Free champ with a time of 4:44.51.
  • The Spartans won the 200 Free Relay as Fitzgerald, Smith, James and Haugen won in 1:23.72.

TOP PERFORMERS (WOMEN):

  • Jessie Tobin was the fastest swimmer in the 1,000 Free, edging teammate Alexa TurcoTobin’s winning time was 10:35.06.
  • The 200 Free went to Maureen Moore in 1:56.59.
  • Freshman Julia Augustsson championed the 100 Breast at 1:06.75.
  • Courtney Sherwood had a time of 2:07.16 to finish first in the 200 Fly. Sherwood also won the 200 IM in 2:10.14.
  • Hana van Loock took first in a pair of races, including the 50 Free (24.08) and the 100 Free (52.45).
  • Juliana Carey was clocked at 2:07.06 to win the 200 Back.
  • The 200 Breast was won by UT’s Alli McFarland as she was timed at 2:26.06.
  • Turco was the first-place finisher in the 500 Free at 5:11.25.
  • Tampa concluded the meet with a win in the 200 Free Relay. Moore, van Loock, Megan Goldthorpe and Torey Brierley were timed in 1:38.96.

Tampa now shifts its focus on the 2020 Sunshine State Conference Championships, which will take place February 13-16 at the Long Center in Clearwater, Fla.
