Spartans overthrown in game against Minn. State Mavericks

St. Petersburg, Fla. – The University of Tampa Men’s basketball team took an L from the Minnesota State Mavericks on Friday evening as the Spartans record falls to 3-2.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

All-Time Series: The series between the two teams is tied at 1-1, Tampa losing the most recent one back in 2014.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Half | Anthony Gamble started the ballgame off with a three-pointer from the top of the key. Alberto Moreno came right back down the court, next possession, and scored an easy basket in the paint. Kevin Krieger scored the first two points for the Mavericks off a made jumper. Moreno came down again showing off handles for another easy look in the paint. Late in the 14th minute, Devon Colley made his first basket of the season from attacking the paint. Tampa led for more than half of the first period, but the Mavericks stayed on their heels from mostly jumpers hitting all net. Marco Downer slammed in his first basket of the game coming off an assist from Vincent Biffle. Within the ninth minute, Quincy Anderson drained a jumper to give Minnesota State their first lead of the game. They went on a 10-0 run to increase their lead to five. With both teams going into the bonus, the Spartans shot 62.5% from the line, in the first 20 minutes, compared to the Mavericks 50.0%. Trailing for seven minutes, the Spartans gained the lead again with 2:19 remaining. Minn. State came back hot, going on a 7-0 run from the hot hand of Krieger.
2nd Half | Back from the break, Anderson came out with a nice dunk, to keep the heat on for the Mavericks. Scoring in consecutive plays, Minn. state went on another run, all coming from the hands of Krieger, giving them their biggest lead of the game, 14. In the 16th minute, Krieger had 14 points and two assists. Coach Schmidt then received a technical early in the second half. With half of the second half gone, Tampa only scored twice from Gamble and Colley. With Tampa on a cold streak, the lead on continued to increase for Minn. State. The Spartans finally saw the ball go through the net from made free-throws. The next actual basket for Tampa came from a layup from Downer. That didn’t slow the Mavericks down though, with four minutes left in the game Minn. State had a 23 point lead. Krieger was their leading scorer with 16. Running low on time, the Mavericks came out on top 75-61
INSIDE THE STATS:
Gamble logged 30+ minutes, scoring 20 points and recording four steals
The Spartans scored 38 points in the paint and 13 second-chance points.
The Mavericks shot 44.4% from the field compared to Tampa’s 35.4%
BEYOND THE BOX:
Coach Richard Schmidt still needs one more win to reach 700.
