GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library continues its monthly free LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, October 10 with a 2001 “cult classic” musical about a transgender woman and her rock band. The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month. Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming film titles in general press releases. But feel free to call the Library at (727) 893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series. Or find titles and more information online: www.mygulfport.us/lgbtq-resources.
About the October 10 film: Based on his smash hit off-Broadway production, John Cameron Mitchell directs and stars in this campy, creative, energizing and poignant rock musical, now considered a cult classic. Hedwig was born a boy in East Germany who undergoes a “botched” sex change operation to be able to marry an American G.I. and emigrate to America. Later, stranded in an American trailer park, Hedwig forges a life for herself and seeks recognition and retribution while performing with her band, The Angry Inch. “Flamboyant, irreverent, naughty and oddly, profoundly moving.” (Detroit News) (Rated R; adults only suggested)
Save the date, Thursday November 14, for the next film in the series. A film fest favorite, this indie comedy/romance/drama tells the story of Zaynab, a Pakistani Muslim lesbian who cares for her TV-obsessed mother, who is also determined to find a husband for her daughter. After Zaynab meets and falls for a bold, spirited Mexican woman, she discovers herself more fully as she immerses herself in the sport of lucha libre, Mexican-style wrestling. “Unsentimental sweetness and pluck.” (Los Angeles Times) (Not Rated)
Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
