No. 2 Tampa Slugs Way to Sweep over No. 6 Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of Tampa took its fifth straight win of 2019 to go with a four-game road sweep over No. 6 Georgia College and State University.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: No. 2 Tampa Spartans 14, No. 6 Georgia College Bobcats 8

All-time Series: Tampa now holds a 53-21 lead in the all-time series, including wins in the last six games. This is also the eighth-straight Spartan win in Milledgeville.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UT came out like it did all series, with a game-defining first inning as it plated eight runs.
- Danny Sirven and Nick Derr drove in the first runs with a run-scoring fielders choice.
- A two-run double by Yorvis Torrealba would score Derr and Sirven, making it 4-0 Spartans.
- Drew Ehrhard would account for a pair of runs on a single, as Danny Blair hit a one-run single through the right side. The other run was scored by Torrealba on a wild pitch.
- The Bobcats made a dent in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs.
- Torrealba kept the scoring going with an RBI double in the second, marking his second two-bagger in as many innings.
- Sirven brought home Alec Aleywine on an RBI groundout in the third.
- The Bobcats continued to fight, crossing one in the third and three in the fifth to cut the Spartan lead to 10-6.
- UT extended its lead to 11-6 on a Stephen Smith RBI groundout in the sixth, before GC would cut the lead back to four at 11-7 in the bottom of the seventh.
- Tampa added two in the eighth to cushion its lead at 14-7 as the first scored on a Torrealba sacrifice fly and the second courtesy of a failed pickoff attempt.
- The Bobcats scored a run in the ninth to cut the final margin to six runs.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Bo Weiss got the nod in his first start as a Spartan, as the junior North Carolina transfer threw the first inning, striking out a pair while allowing two runs.
- Left Sammy Peralta was credited with the win to move to 1-0 on the year. He would toss 3.1 innings, allowing one earned run with four punchouts.
- Also pitching for UT was Jacinto Arredondo for 1.2 innings and Tyler Beck for 3.0 innings. Beck wuld finish with six strikeouts and just one hit and one walk.
- Torrealba enjoyed his top game as a Spartan as the junior transfer went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs and a walk.
- Drew Ehrhard added a pair of hits in his first start of the season at shortstop.
- Also collecting two hits apiece was Blair as the South Caroline transfer also scored two and drove in a run.
- Nick DeTringo would come away with a hit to go with two runs and two walks from his leadoff spot as he started at second base for the first time in 2019.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- The quick-start Spartans scored 13 first-inning runs and six second-inning scores in the four-game series.
- The four-game series sweep is the first for UT since it took a quartet from Stillman at home in 2011.
- This marks UT’s fifth-straight win over a nationally-ranked opponent after also winning last week against No. 1 North Greenville.
- Six of UT’s seven games in 2019 have been against a ranked opponent.
- UT and GCSU have now met every season since 1995, making it 25 consecutive years for the non-conference opponents.
- Head coach Joe Urso now stands at 791 career wins as the all-time winningest coach in UT history is approaching another milestone.

The Spartans return home for their home opener in a three-game series with LIU-Post. The first game is Friday at 6 p.m., with the other games on Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
