Nelson and Nagy Earn SSC Player of the Week Honors
MELBOURNE, Fla. – Two University of Tampa women’s basketball players have been selected as Sunshine State Conference Players of the Week. Kris Nelson earned SSC Offensive Player of the Week and Dori Nagy earned SSC Defensive Player of the Week.
Nelson earned the Offensive Player of the Week after she led the Spartans to a perfect 2-0 record. In the game against Eckerd, Nelson led a ferocious comeback, as UT overcame an 18-point deficit in the third quarter. Nelson would end up scoring 17 points in the victory, as she shot 6-of-9 from the field and added five assists in the victory. In the game against Rollins, Nelson would add an additional 14 points, as she shot 4-of-7 from the field. She would also add another five assists in the 85-60 victory. For the week the Augusta, Ga. native averaged 15.5 points per game with five assists. She would also shoot at a .625 percentage. This is the first time Nelson has earned Player of the Week honors.
Nagy earned the Defensive Player of the Week as she anchored the Spartan defense in the 2-0 week. In the game against Eckerd, Nagy had seven points and five rebounds. Her big game this week came in the victory against Rollins as she recorded a double-double. Nagy posted 15 points, as she was able to shoot 11-of-12 from the free throw line. She would also add 14 rebounds, including 12 coming on the defensive side of the ball. For the week, she would average 11 points, 9.5 rebounds, and two assists per game. She would also add three steals during the week. This is the second time Nagy has been named Player of the Week this season and the fourth time in her career.
Nagy, Nelson, and the rest of the Spartans will be back in action this weekend as they travel to face the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday. The game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of November 18 – 24, 2019. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
