GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library continues its monthly free LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, December 12 with a film about LGBT activists organizing to support striking mineworkers in Thatcher-ruled Britain. Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the December 12 film: Inspired by a true story. In 1984’s Thatcher-ruled Britain, a strike by the National Union of Mineworkers prompts a group of LGBT activists to raise money for the families of striking workers. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the LGBT group targets a small village in Wales where they decide to try and offer their donation in person. The strike drags on and the two groups find that standing together forms the strongest of all unions. “A joyous crowd-pleaser that genuinely works.” (Rotten Tomatoes) (Rated R)
Save the date, Thursday January 9, for the next film in the series. While “bathroom bills” began sweeping across the nation, The Human Rights Campaign said 2016 was the most dangerous year ever for transgender Americans. This 2019 film captures the ensuing civil rights battle from the perspective of a group of embattled parents fighting to protect their children from discriminatory laws in their home state. The heart of the film lies in the stories of the families who accept and support their kids for exactly who they are. “A compelling documentary showing that transgender rights matter.” (Rotten Tomatoes) (Not Rated)
Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
