| Photographer Clyde Butcher’s newest special exhibition Myakka River: A Florida Treasure opened at The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature on Friday to popular demand and acclaim. Now, The Bishop is inviting the public to get even closer to the man behind the lens during a special evening with the world-famous photographer known as the “Ansel Adams of Florida.” On Thursday, March 5, Butcher will give a short presentation about this exhibition — sharing his own special connection with this wild and alluring place of healing — then he will open the floor for questions from the audience. The evening’s format is styled after The Bishop’s popular monthly think + drink / science programs and will take place in The Planetarium. Myakka River: A Florida Treasure, which is open at The Bishop through Sept. 6, includes 30 photographs that capture the spirit of a primal, exotic place and allows visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty, complexity and diversity of vital freshwater areas where alligators, turtles and cottonmouths swim, and herons, cranes and limpkins strut through its shallows. Butcher took the photos in Myakka River State Park, Triangle Ranch and surrounding lands. “I have always felt that the best photographs are taken in surroundings near to your heart,” said Butcher. “I had photographed the Myakka River ecosystem before my stroke in 2017, but afterward, the Myakka became a sort of sanctuary for me. |
