KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The United Soccer Coaches Association recognizes stand-out players through their All-Regional selections and the University of Tampa had four players honored in this year’s All-South Region.
The Spartans’ leader, Nastasia Asgedom, was named to the First Team in the USCA All-South Region. A Tampa native, Asgedom started in every match this season and led the team with six assists. The senior registered two game-winning goals to bring her career total to seven match-clinching goals, which ranks eighth in UT history. In her final regular season match, she tallied three assists for the first time in her four-year career. She was named to the USCA All-South Region Third Team in 2017.
Reni Taiwo, a key player in the UT defense, was named to the USCA All-South Region Second Team. Taiwo appeared in all 17 games, starting in 16, and held down the middle of the defense for UT. She was the centerpiece of a defense that only allowed 20 goals on the year, which ranked third best in the Sunshine State Conference. The sophomore also helped her goal-keeper, Megan Bromwell, post the third-best “goals against average” in the conference.
The main goal-scorers for UT, Emily Cady and Moeko Morse, were both selected to the USCA All-South Region Third Team. Cady led the offense with eight goals on 34 shots, sporting a .647 shot on target percentage. The junior from East Lake, Florida started in 15 of 17 appearances and recorded a hat trick in the regular season finale against Saint Leo. Morse was second on the team in goals scored and points with six and 13, respectively. She was the fifth Tampa Spartan to be named SSC Freshman of the Year, first since CiCi Gonzalez in 2012. She was tabbed SSC Player of the Week for the week of August 27-September 2 as she logged a hat trick in an upset victory over No. 18 Mississippi College.
