Sony Pictures Entertainment is bringing movie fans the beginning of their sleepless nights with the release of the first official trailer for “The Grudge (2020)“. The franchise is back with John Cho and Andrea Riseborough starring in the new horror movie.

Billed as a continuation the English-language horror series that started with the 2004 movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the upcoming film starts with Peter Spencer’s (Cho) discovery of a menacing entity haunting a secluded manor. Following his terrifying experience with a clogged bathtub, a local detective named Muldoon (Riseborough) investigates bizarre happenings seemingly connected to the mysterious house.

According to the official synopsis, “a single mother and young detective, Muldoon, discovers that a suburban house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death. Now, she runs to save herself and her son from demonic spirits from the cursed house in her neighborhood.”

Demian Bichir, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver also star in “The Grudge”, which is directed by Nicolas Pesce, who also penned the screenplay based on a story by him and Jeff Buhler. Sam Raimi produces the pic with Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise.

Pesce previously told EW what’s interesting about reimagining the series for the latest installment, “I think the most compelling thing about the grudge is that it’s inescapable. All you need to do is walk into a house that feels unassuming, and you’re screwed.”

He went on saying of the lore, “It’s not your traditional haunted house movie where you pull up to a creepy, Gothic-looking house and go, ‘oh god that’s haunted.’ A motif of all the films, especially this one, is that behind the most normal kind of house, inside the most normal-seeming life, there can be something horrifying – whether it’s real and grounded, or something otherworldly and terrifying, it can happen anywhere, behind any door, to anyone. It’s unique to this story and philosophically terrifying.”

Teasing how terrifying the new movie is, Pesce said at New York Comic Con, “The movie’s way more f**ked up. Not that the wave of J-Horror in the early 2000s wasn’t f**ked up – but this is really f**ked up.”

“The Grudge” is set to be unleashed in U.S. theaters on January 3.
