Doubleheader Results in Split For Spartans in Old Coast Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team split the doubleheader in the Old Coast Classic on Friday afternoon.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (Game One):
Final: Tampa 1 (W: Corynn Miner, 2-1), No. 24 Valdosta State 0 (L: Shayne O’Connell, 1-2)
Records: University of Tampa Spartans (3-2), No. 24 Valdosta State Blazers (1-3)
Location: Flagler Sports Complex || St. Augustine, Fla.
All-Time Series: Tampa trails in the series, 32-10, but the Spartans have won three straight over the Blazers. Last season in the NCAA South Regional, UT defeated VSU (1-0) in nine innings en route to the NCAA South Regional Final.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 6TH | In a scoreless tie, Cristina Clauberg lined a base-knock into left field. With two outs, Lexie Chevalier reached base on an infield single. With two runners on, Mackenzie Allen pinch-ran for Clauberg. Maddie Farrell walked on four pitches to load the bases. With the bases juiced, freshman outfielder Mariah Galhouse lasered the offering through the left side to drive in Allen from third.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Corynn Miner
made her third start of the year for UT; the red-shirt junior tossed a one-hit complete game shutout and struck out four batters, while allowing one walk.
- Miner‘s logged two complete games in three starts this year and the right-hander’s registered 17 complete games in 28 career starts.
- Mariah Galhouse tallied the game-winning hit and the freshman has a hit in three of four games this season.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- This season, Tampa has tossed three shutouts in five games.
- The Spartans have won three straight games by one run against Valdosta State.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (Game Two):
Final: Flagler 3, Tampa 2
Records: University of Tampa Spartans (3-3), Flagler College Saints (4-1)
Location: Flagler Sports Complex || St. Augustine, Fla.
All-Time Series: Tampa trails the series, 5-2, in seven all-time meetings. The Saints are currently on a four-game winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 3RD | With one out, Cristina Clauberg reached base on a free-pass and advanced to third on a double from Corynn Miner. The following at-bat, Maddie Farrell used a bloop base-knock to right field to drive in two runs for the Spartans.
BOT 3RD | Flagler’s NaJah Gerrald laid down a bunt and a throwing error from Alexa Russo allowed Gerrald to advance to third base. Gerrald scored easily as Paige Maseda roped a triple to right-center field and cut the Spartans’ lead in half.
BOT 6TH | To lead off the inning, Courtney Robinson walked and advanced to third after a Natalie Murphy double. Tampa made a pitching change and brought in Miner, however, the Saints used a sacrifice fly to even the score at two apiece. With one out and Murphy at third base, Maria Kappos laid down a successful bunt to drive in the go-ahead run for Flagler.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Mariah Galhouse, a freshman from Spring Hill, Fla., started for the third time in six games and went four innings in the circle. Galhouse allowed one run on four hits and did not allow a walk.
- Jodi Handler came into relief in the fifth inning and allowed two runs on one hit. The sophomore transfer faced six batters, allowed one walk and recorded one strikeout.
- Corynn Miner made her first relief appearance of 2020 and faced three batters, allowing one hit.
- In the seventh inning, Emily Proffitt pinch-hit and led off with a base-hit in an attempt to start a rally.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Maddie Farrell tallied two hits in three at-bats and drove in two runs. Farrell, a senior catcher, led the team in RBI last season and currently leads the Spartans with four runs batted in.
- Stephanie Balmer‘s currently riding a three-game hit streak. In 2019, as a freshman, Balmer logged a ten-game hit streak.
- Dating back to last season, the last three road losses have come in the opposing teams’ final at-bat.
UP NEXT: Tampa will continue competition in the Old Coast Classic tomorrow afternoon as the Spartans face off against Wingate at 4:30 p.m.
