Meet Disney’s new Prince Eric! After months of speculation on who will be taking the part of Ariel’s love interest, it has now been revealed that British actor Jonah Hauer-King has nabbed the coveted role in the live-action “The Little Mermaid (2020)“.
Hauer-King was previously named as one of the contenders for the role in September. At the time, he reportedly was tested along with “Krypton” actor Cameron Cuffe at London’s Pinewood Studios for the role.
The 24-year-old actor, who has starred in this year’s movie “A Dog’s Way Home“, eventually won over Cuffe for the part. “13 Reasons Why” star Christian Navarro and “Shazam!” star Asher Angel were previously also rumored circling the same role, after Harry Styles backed away from talks to star in the movie.
Hauer-King made his feature film debut in Danny Huston’s “The Last Photograph“, in which he landed the lead role. He played Laurie on 2017’s BBC miniseries “Little Women” and has completed filming for Blumhouse’s coming-of-age drama “Once Upon a Time in Staten Island“.
Hauer-King will star opposite Halle Bailey, who was cast in as Ariel in July. Javier Bardem has landed the role of Ariel’s father, King Triton, while Melissa McCarthy is reported to portray villainous sea witch Ursula. “Room” star Jacob Tremblay and “Crazy Rich Asians” actress Awkwafina also join the cast as the voice of tropical fish Flounder and seagull Scuttle respectively. Daveed Diggs is additionally tapped to play Sebastian, a Jamaican crab and advisor of King Triton.
Rob Marshall is set to direct the pic, which has a script written by Jane Goldman. Alan Menken, who scored the original movie, returns as composer for the upcoming remake. Menken will also write new songs for the movie alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda. Menken is also producing the upcoming movie along with Miranda and John DeLuca.
Production for the movie is slated to begin in early 2020. No release date is announced for the movie just yet.
