The release of Quentin Tarantino‘s latest movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” has been put on hold indefinitely in China. The film starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie among others is blocked by Bruce Lee‘s daughter Shannon.
The movie which got substantial financial backing from China’s Bona Film Group was initially approved for release in the country on October 25. However, Shannon Lee filed a direct complaint to China’s National Film Administration about the on-screen portrayal of her late father.
An idol of many in China, Bruce Lee played by Mike Moh was depicted as a cocky guy in the drama comedy movie. In one scene, an arrogant young Lee claimed that he had “crippled” Muhammad Ali but Lee was later knocked down by Pitt’s character.
“As long as Quentin can make some cuts, it will be released as planned,” an insider told Variety. According to The Hollywood Reporter, people at Bona Film Group were scrambling to work with the helmer to cut the film for re-approval ahead of the original release date.
Tarantino defended his depiction of Bruce Lee at a press junket in Moscow in August. “Bruce Lee was kind of an arrogant guy,” he said as quoted by Variety. “The way he was talking, I didn’t just make a lot of that up. I heard him say things like that, to that effect. If people are saying, ‘Well he never said he could beat up Muhammad Ali.’ Well, yeah, he did. Not only did he say that, but his wife, Linda Lee, said that in her first biography I ever read.”
Shannon fired back at the director, claiming that her father’s confidence might have been mistaken for arrogance. “He could shut up about it,” she slammed the filmmaker. “That would be really nice. Or he could apologize or he could say, ‘I don’t really know what Bruce Lee was like. I just wrote it for my movie. But that shouldn’t be taken as how he really was.’ ”
