Bats Come Alive as Spartans Take Series at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The top-ranked University of Tampa baseball team took the rubber game of a regional series on the road over Carson-Newman College.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: No. 1 Tampa 9, Carson-Newman 5

All-time Series: Tampa leads the all-time series with a record of 5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UT took an early lead, plating a pair in the first inning on a bases load walk by Josh Rulli. The second run was scored on an Eagle error. || Top 1 || 2-0 UT
- Following a Carson-Newman run in the bottom of the first, Tampa regained the two-run advantage on a Luke Benoit groundout that scored Nick Derr. || Top 3 || 3-1 UT
- The Eagles took their first lead of the game on a three-run home run by Mike Wroth. || Bottom 3 || 4-3 C-N
- Shortstop Christian Flint gave Tampa the lead for good on a two-run home run that also scored Benoit. || Top 5 || 5-4 UT
- Drew Ehrhard slugged his first home run of the season on a solo shot. || Top 6 || 6-4 UT
- Dan Sullivan continued his hot weekend at the plate as the first baseman doubled home Andrew Mills to extend the lead to three runs. || Top 8 || 7-4 UT
- Jose Cadenas hit the third Spartan round-tripper of the day, and his team-leading third on the season, scoring Flint. || Top 9 || 9-4 UT
- A bases loaded walk by Carson-Newman was the lone run the host team scored in its final at bat. || Bottom 9 || 9-5 UT
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Ehrhard paced Tampa at the plated with three hits as the junior second baseman drove in a run and scored twice.
- Sullivan, Derr, Rulli and Flint each had multiple hits with two.
- Driving in two runs apiece was Cadenas and Flint.
- Nik Constantakos earned the start and exited following 2.1 innings pitched with a no decision.
- Jacinto Arredondo entered and threw 5.2 scoreless innings while striking out six Eagles to move to 2-0 on the season.
- Michael Paul picked up his second save of the weekend as he entered to register the final out.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- Tampa has now taken both series in 2020, defeating Post and Carson-Newman.
- Sullivan capped a three-game weekend where he hit .667 with a home run and seven RBI.
UP NEXT:
The Spartans return home for their Sunshine State Conference opener against longtime rival Florida Southern College. Friday’s opener is scheduled for 6 p.m., at the UT Baseball Field.
