WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team secured the series victory with a spilt in Saturday’s doubleheader. The two teams played a total of 34 innings in three games, including two extra-inning contests.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (Game One):
Final: Tampa 5 (W: Mariah Galhouse, 3-1), Palm Beach Atlantic 3 (L: Taylor Pennica (2-1)
Records: University of Tampa Spartans (7-3, 2-0 SSC), Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (7-5, 0-2 SSC)

All-Time Series: The Spartans hold the series lead, 18-13, as Tampa’s won the last three meetings against the Sailfish.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 1ST | Leading off the game, Stephanie Balmer reached base on an infield single. Corynn Miner laced a line drive up the middle and was followed up by Mariah Galhouse‘s single up the middle. With the bases-loaded, the Spartans took a two-run lead on a throwing error by the shortstop. || UT 2, PBA 0
BOT 2ND | PBA’s Janie McCloskey led off the inning with a single to center field. Katherine Budnovich hit a dribbler back to Mariah Galhouse, however, Galhouse‘s throw went into center field which allowed McCloskey to reach base on the fielder’s choice. With two runners on, Edmilly Molina scorched a double off the center field fence to even the score. || UT 2, PBA 2
TOP 3RD | Corynn Miner hit a solo blast to dead center field, through the wind gust, for her second home run of the season. Miner registered her eighth homer of the year to give Tampa a one-run lead. || UT 3, PBA 2
BOT 3RD | To begin the inning, Magnolia West hit a grounder to second base for an infield single. The Sailfish followed up with another infield single by Alexis Guerra. The Spartans recorded an out with a fielder’s choice up the middle, however, West advanced to third on the play. With a runner on third, McCloskey sent a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in PBA’s third run of the game. || UT 3, PBA 3
TOP 6TH | Maddie Farrell, a senior catcher, led off for UT with a base-knock up the middle. Mackenzie Allen pinch-ran for the catcher and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bailey Phillips. On a wild pitch, Allen moved to third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lexie Chevalier. || UT 4, PBA 3
TOP 7TH | Balmer recorded her second hit of the game with a single up the middle. Clauberg laid down an ideal sacrifice bunt to advance the runner. After a single from Miner, Farrell drove in an insurance run with a infield single. || UT 5, PBA 3
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Mariah Galhouse completed her fifth start of her freshman campaign; the right-hander pitched a complete game and allowed two earned runs on five hits, while striking out two batters.
- Corynn Miner tallied her with season-high three hits and extended her hit streak to three games.
- Maddie Farrell totaled three hits in five at-bats as it was her third multi-hit game of the year.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Sailfish did not have a batter log multiple hits in the game.
- For the fifth time this year, the Spartans scored a run in the first inning.
- First pitch was scheduled for 12:00 p.m., however, game two of the series did not begin until 3:30 p.m. due to a weather delay.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 2ND | PBA’s Edmilly Molina doubled to begin the inning for the Sailfish. Hannah Carlton walked in the following at-bat and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Liz Albertini poked a single up the middle to drive in the initial run of the game. Magnolia West used a sacrifice fly to increase the lead for PBA. After a walk and a pitching change, Maddie Biggs lined a two-run single into center field. || PBA 4, UT 0
TOP 3RD | To lead off the inning, Emalee Jansen singled to left field and advanced on a wild pitch. Jansen moved to third on a base-knock from Emily Proffitt. Stephanie Balmer‘s infield single put the Spartans on the board as Jansen scored on the play. || PBA 4, UT 1
BOT 3RD | Carlton walked for PBA and advanced to second on an Albertini single. With the bases-loaded, Alexis Guerra drove in two runs with a base-hit and extended the lead for the Sailfish. || PBA 6, UT 1
TOP 6TH | Trailing by five runs, the Spartans started to chip away in the sixth. Corynn Miner led off with a single to center field. Bailey Phillips, the UT leader in hit-by-pitches, reached base as she was plunked by the Sailfish. Mackenzie Allen logged an infield single with a slap to third base which loaded the bases. Jansen provided a clutch hit for Tampa with a bases-clearing, two-run double to the left center gap. || PBA 6, UT 4
TOP 7TH | Balmer started the seventh inning with a base-knock to right field. After a pitching change for PBA, Ansley Casillas pinch-hit for the second night in a row. Casillas, a freshman from Tennessee, came through in the clutch with a base-hit through the left side. In the following at-bat, Miner walked to bring up Mariah Galhouse. Galhouse singled up the middle to cut the lead in half, while the throw to home plate gunned down Casillas to prevent a tie game. With one out and Miner at third base, a passed ball allowed the Spartans to tie the game. || UT 6, PBA 6
BOT 10TH | PBA led off with back-to-back hits from Faith Allen and West. UT recorded an out, then Biggs loaded the bases with an infield single. With the bases-juiced, Janie McCloskey battled in the at-bat and eventually poked an RBI single into center field to end the game. || PBA 7, UT 6
INSIDE THE STATS:
- The Spartans used three pitchers in game three; Sam Kaye made the start and allowed three runs on three hits.
- Jodi Handler came into relief in the second inning and went six full innings for Tampa. The sophomore transfer struck out four while allowing two runs on seven hits.
- Corynn Miner made her second relief appearance of the year; the red-shirt junior went two innings and allowed one run on six hits.
- Emalee Jansen led the Spartans with three hits in five at-bats; Jansen tied her career-high with three RBI.
- Palm Beach Atlantic’s Edmilly Molina was a home run shy of the cycle as junior registered a double, triple and a single in five at-bats.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Miner extended her hit-streak to four games.
- The Spartans played 34 innings in three games, with two extra inning game including a 17-inning affair on Friday night.
- Tampa totaled at least 10 hits in all three games this weekend.
- It was the second extra-inning game for the Spartans this year. In 2019, UT played in eight extra-inning games and compiled a 5-3 record.
UP NEXT: Tampa will host Saint Leo for a three-game series, beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader will start at 1:00 p.m.
